Sleep disorders negatively impact the health and quality of life for over 40 million Americans. The Center for Sleep Disorders at Mainland Medical Center specializes in diagnosing and treating patients who have sleep-related problems.
Providing a comprehensive approach, the Center offers a home-like atmosphere designed to help patients feel as comfortable as possible during their sleep evaluation. Registered technologists use state-of-the-art equipment to monitor your sleep.
Not all sleep disorders require an overnight sleep study. Persons referred for testing will spend one night (sometimes more) in a specially designed "home-like" sleeping area. Monitoring patches are carefully and painlessly placed on the patient. The sleep pattern information such as eye movement, heart rate, brain waves, breathing and airflow are recorded. The procedure is called "polysomnogram" (PSG). The PSG is a painless procedure, which permits patients to sleep normally. A technician is present throughout the night in the event a patient needs to go to the restroom, get a drink or has other needs.
Most insurance companies cover sleep disorder testing. As individual policies vary, you should contact your insurance provider to confirm what portions of the testing may be covered.
Patients are either self-referred or are referred by a primary care physician to receive a comprehensive consultation. This evaluation determines whether patients are scheduled overnight for further testing. Alternatively, a Primary Care Physician may request a PSG be performed. All tests are generally performed on an outpatient basis. Pre-authorization from the patient's insurance carrier should be obtained prior to being admitted for overnight testing.
